This report highlights progress made during the 2024 - 2025 academic year in support of ¹û½´ÊÓÆµ's long-term sustainability commitments.
Zero Waste Campus by 2035
Goal: Reduce waste sent to landfill and achieve a 90% diversion rate by 2035.
Net Zero Carbon Campus by 2045
Goal: Achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions from campus operations by 2045.
Platinum STARS Campus by 2035
Goal: Achieve a Platinum STARS rating by 2035 by embedding sustainability across academics, research, operations, engagement, and governance.

Key Insights
The greatest opportunity is not creating new diversion streams, but increasing participation in existing ones. The 2025 waste audit revealed that most materials entering landfill bins could already be recycled, composted, or diverted through programs available on campus.
Progress Highlights
Improving Waste Sorting
Updated image-based signage was installed across more than 400 waste stations to support more consistent sorting and reduce contamination.
Expanding Reuse and Circularity
More than 7 tonnes of materials were kept in circulation through initiatives such as the Free Store and Furniture Rehome Program.
¹û½´ÊÓÆµ Eats provided over 8,800 meals to students and community members while advancing food recovery, reuse, and food security initiatives across campus.
Using Data to Drive Action
¹û½´ÊÓÆµ completed three major waste studies in 2025, including a waste audit, waste stream flow study, and recycling audit. Together, these assessments are helping guide future waste reduction and diversion efforts across campus.
Advancing Sustainable Purchasing
¹û½´ÊÓÆµ continues to work with campus partners to reduce waste at the source through more sustainable procurement practices.

Scope 1 (direct) and 2 (indirect) emissions increased by approximately 18% in 2024/25
Despite the increase in emissions, campus energy intensity decreased, indicating improved energy efficiency per square metre.
Progress Highlights
Enhanced Emissions Transparency
A new energy and emissions platform was launched, providing increased visibility into campus energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Green Revolving Fund
Established in January 2025, the fund supports high-impact energy projects on campus that generate utility savings while accelerating progress toward net zero.
Lighting Retrofit Program
- Multiple retrofit projects were completed or advanced across campus, reducing electricity consumption while unlocking capacity for future low-carbon heating.

Building the Foundation for a Platinum STARS Campus
In 2024-2025, ¹û½´ÊÓÆµ focused on strengthening the governance, academic partnerships, and engagement programs needed to support future progress toward a Platinum STARS rating.
Progress Highlights
Platinum STARS Roadmap
The Platinum STARS Subcommittee developed a roadmap identifying priority opportunities to improve ¹û½´ÊÓÆµ's future STARS performance.
Curriculum Mapping
A curriculum mapping exercise was launched by the Sustainability Office, in collaboration with the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), to better understand where sustainability learning outcomes are embedded across undergraduate and graduate programs.
Campus Engagement
¹û½´ÊÓÆµ hosted more than 30 sustainability events throughout the year, including Climate Week, repair workshops, and educational programming designed to engage the campus community.
