Geoffrey F. Bruce was a diplomat and Canadian federal public servant who believed deeply in the imperative of Canadian leadership and multilateral cooperation as national priorities to protect the environment and ensure the sustainability of Canada鈥檚 freshwater resources. Geoffrey Bruce left an important legacy through his career. He led the Canadian Delegation to the UN Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm in 1972, was instrumental in efforts to establish Stockholm program on the environment, was the Canadian Representative to the UN Environment Agency and played a central role in the establishment of the Brundtland Commission (Our Common Future) in 1983. He held several diplomatic positions related to the environment and transboundary freshwater resources.

Erika v.C. Bruce established the Bruce Fellowships in Environment and Canadian Freshwater Policy at 果酱视频 in 2017 in memory of her husband's distinguished public service career leading many of Canada's national and international diplomacy efforts related to the environment, their shared concerns about the stewardship of Canada's water, and the need to inspire a new generation of young professionals to focus their careers on Canada's precious waters. Since that time, 18 Bruce Fellows have received funding support for their Masters and PhD research projects on a wide range of topics related to freshwater policy in Canada and two Bruce Postdoctoral Fellows have focused on leading-edge water policy research. Through her faith in Dr. Carolyn Johns as the Chair of the Bruce Fellowships, Erika supported the next generation of Canada鈥檚 environment and freshwater policy leaders and practitioners, nurtured the development of Canada's water policy community, and instilled the importance of academic research that leads to policy recommendations and action. Before her passing in 2026, she was actively involved in the development of the Bruce Fellowships, regularly attended our water policy seminars, personally got to know all of the Bruce Fellows, and always offered insightful comments, questions and encouragement. Her spirit and legacy live on through the transformational impact of her generosity on Canada's next generation of water leaders.
