Inclusive AI Adoption and Training
Canada is recognized globally for its leadership in artificial intelligence research. Yet many organizations continue to face challenges adopting AI and developing the skills needed to use it effectively.
The Diversity Institute’s work focuses on inclusive AI Adoption. While Canada has established itself as a leader in AI research, adoption remains uneven across sectors and regions. We examine who is adopting AI, who is being left behind and what is needed to ensure the benefits of AI are broadly shared. Our research explores adoption patterns, workforce readiness, skills development and the policies and practices that support responsible implementation.
In addition to research, we develop and deliver training programs that help students, job seekers, workers, entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized businesses build AI, digital and professional skills. We also work with governments, employers and community partners to identify emerging skills needs and develop evidence-based approaches to workforce development.
This page brings together our research, reports, competency frameworks, training programs and other resources related to AI adoption and skills development.
Research and reports
Our research about AI in the workplace looks at rates, barriers, and opportunities of AI adoption. We also provide analysis about AI reshaping jobs and the skills needed to remain globally competitive. Our research can support policymakers to develop evidence-based AI adoption strategies while also helping employers, SMEs, entrepreneurs, and workers to participate fully in an AI-enabled economy.
AI Skills Training and Workforce Development Programs
The Diversity Institute develops and delivers training programs to support inclusive AI adoption and upskilling as well as professional communication and critical thinking skills to meet the rapid technological transformation happening globally, to support job creation and grow the economy. Our programs support students preparing to enter the workforce, workers seeking to strengthen their skills, experienced professionals adapting to changing workplace requirements, entrepreneurs and employers responding to rapid technological change. We also develop tailored initiatives designed to meet the needs of different communities, including recent graduates, Indigenous Peoples, Black youth, newcomers and immigrants.
AiDaPT builds on the success of the Advanced Digital and Professional Training (ADaPT) program by expanding its AI skills development curriculum. It integrates AI literacy, digital skills and career development for the AI transformation which is changing how people live and work, how businesses compete, and how countries protect their sovereignty. Participants develop practical skills in areas such as generative AI, data analytics, cybersecurity and digital technologies while strengthening communication, problem solving and career readiness.
Since its launch in 2014, ADaPT has supported thousands of participants across Canada and has evolved through initiatives tailored to different communities and labour market needs. As AI increasingly reshapes workplaces across sectors, AiDaPT helps participants understand how AI tools can be applied in professional settings and prepares them to work alongside emerging technologies.
Recent examples include:
• ADaPT for Black Youth, which combines training in artificial intelligence, digital skills and career development with coaching, mentorship and employment supports. Since 2022, the program has served over 500 participants and achieved strong employment outcomes.
• ADaPT for Indigenous and Young Adults in Manitoba, developed in partnership with RRC Polytech and TECHNATION, which includes training in AI, data analysis, cybersecurity and other high-demand skills while incorporating culturally relevant approaches and wraparound supports.
• Programs designed for newcomers and internationally educated professionals that help participants strengthen digital and professional skills, build networks and connect with employment opportunities.
AiDaPT combines technical training, career development and coaching to help participants build confidence, strengthen employability and prepare for opportunities in a rapidly changing labour market.
Skills Bridge helps small and medium-sized businesses strengthen workforce capabilities and respond to changing skills needs. Developed in partnership with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and Magnet, the initiative provides accessible training, learning pathways and resources in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, leadership, governance, human resources and business operations.
Skills Bridge was designed to address a challenge faced by many SMEs: Finding the time, resources and expertise needed to invest in workforce development while responding to day-to-day business demands. Through flexible learning opportunities and practical resources, the program helps businesses build capacity, adopt new technologies and support employee development.
Drawing on research and evaluation, Skills Bridge continues to explore what works in helping SMEs strengthen skills, improve adaptability and prepare for technological and economic change.
